Local schools place in Icebreaker meet

Birmingham- A number of local high schools participated in the Icebreaker Indoor Track meet held at the Birmingham Crossplex from Jan. 2-3. Schools spanning 1-6A took place on Jan. 2 while 7A schools competed on the third.
Pelham finished third overall on the girl’s side of competition out of 26 teams, while the boys finished eighth out of 29. The Helena girls finished 16th while the boys finished 20th. The Spain Park girls finished 10th while the Thompson girls came in 12th out of 18 7A schools. The Thompson and Spain Park boys finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in 7A competition.
All schools turned in impressive individual performances from their top athletes. Highlighted for Pelham was Mary Grace Stozier and Brandon Hollins. Stozier finished first in the 800-meter run and the 1600 meter run on her way to collecting 20 crucial points for the Pelham girls. Hollins won the high jump with a jump of 6-00.00 while also placing second overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.72. The Pelham girls also placed first in the 4×800 meter relay.
Claire Vaughn of Helena finished seventh in the 800 meter run and eighth in the 1600 meter run, and was the only female for Helena to place in multiple events. The Helena girls’ seventh-place finish was also one higher than Pelham in the 4×200 meter relay. The Helena boys scored the majority of their points in relays, posting a third place finish in the 4×800 meter relay alongside a seventh place finish in the 4×800.
Sarah Sims McGrath placed fifth in the 1600-meter run while also placing third in the 3200-meter run to lead all scorers for Spain Park. Zoe Shore also placed sixth in the 1600 alongside McGrath. Daniel Nixon placed third overall in the boys’ 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.73. Christian Strong also placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Thompson girls’ 4×200 meter team placed fourth to highlight their day. For the boys, Patrick Haywood came in fourth in the 60-meter run, and they came away with a first place finish in the 4×800 meter relay.
