Elvena Ray Higgins, age 92, died Thursday, Feb. 5 in Huntsville.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7 at Pinelawn Gardens. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7 at Bolton Funeral Home in Columbiana. A memorial service at Asbury United Methodist Church will be announced at a later date.
Elvena Ray Higgins was born on July 12, 1922 to Edgar and Zelma Ray in Birmingham. She grew up near Chelsea and was married to Rev. Thomas Arthur Higgins for 52 years. During the years they pastored several churches in the area including Lester’s Chapel United Methodist Church for the last years of their ministry. As a pastor’s wife, she devoted her life to serving others in her work, her home, and her church. Elvena worked at The First National Bank of Columbiana for 35 years.
Mrs. Higgins is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Thomas A. Higgins and a sister, Demoval Alexander.
She is survived by her sister, Mavis Burnette; daughter, Leona Nowland (Lamar); son, Tom Higgins (Vera); six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.
Mrs. Higgins was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for her grandchildren and many quilts for friends and relatives. She was a member of the sewing and quilting group at Asbury United Methodist Church in Huntsville, piecing and quilting quilts for charity.
As a multi-talented lady, she assisted her husband in his woodwork shop, made hand woven baskets and picture frames; she upholstered furniture, kept a garden and canned, cross-stitched, crocheted and tatted. She enjoyed hosting family dinners and cooking special desserts enjoyed by all.
