PELHAM – A supplemental education center in Pelham will offer a seminar for parents to get tips on helping their children retain what they learned at school over the summer.

GradePower Learning Pelham and Shelby County Moms Guide are co-sponsoring a free Preventing Summer Learning Loss seminar on March 25 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and March 26 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at GradePower Learning, 349 Huntley Parkway.

“Students can lose academic footing during the summers,” GradePower Pelham owner Kathy Brown said. “They lose a lot of the gains they had during the school year because during the summer they’re not active in learning.”

Brown said the seminar would include tips on how to minimize summer learning loss in reading, math, concentration and study skills.

“We will lead a discussion and a presentation,” Brown said. “Parents attend for information and strategies. We’re planning a series of seminars.”

Pelham’s GradePower Learning opened in October 2013 and is one of two branches in Shelby County. The other branch is located off U.S. 280 on Doug Baker Boulevard.

“We have students of all ages and all grades attend for enrichment and catch-up and get-ahead opportunities,” Brown said.

Childcare will not be provided during the seminar.

The seminar is free, and reservations are required. To register, call (205) 620-2373.
