PELHAM – Trash Taxi is teaming up with the city of Pelham and Shelby County to provide a curbside service for Heavy Trash Pickup on Saturday, April 11.

Heavy Trash Day, which takes place twice a year – once in April, then again in October – offers the community an alternative way to dispose of their heavier trash items without having to discard the materials themselves. There will be 10 trucks en route to pick up the disposed items around the city and city limits.

Roberto Rodriguez, the owner of Trash Taxi, said all materials that are to be discarded must be put out the night before pickup to ensure they get all of the items quickly and efficiently.

“Our trucks will start to go through the entire city to make sure we can pick up everything we can. Everything must be put out no later than 6 a.m. Saturday morning,” Rodriguez said. “We also emphasize that if the materials can be donated or recycled to any organization, that they do that instead. Our materials, unfortunately, go straight to the landfill.”

Examples of the items accepted for pick up include: Grills, push lawnmowers and mattresses, along with special handling for certain items such as paint cans. The items that are not accepted for pick up include: Refrigerators, televisions, freezers and stoves. The items must not weigh more than 300 pounds or be more than 6 feet tall. All items that are to be picked up must be placed more than four feet from the curb and away from overhead obstacles.
