HELENA–Everything from sailboats to barns to castles were on display the evening of May 5 at Helena Elementary School as students showed off all of their impressive art work they had been working on throughout the school year.

HES hosted “Family Night at the Art Show” from 4:30-8 p.m. for parents and family members to come and view their child’s artwork they worked on throughout the year.

High school students and other art teachers judged students work for each class and awarded ribbons for first, second and third place and also a best of show award.

Helena Elementary School Art Teacher Adam Short was impressed with how talented his students were and added that Helena students will be well represented at the County Art Show on Thursday, May 7 at Oak Mountain Elementary School.

“We mostly used mixed medium so we worked with a different mixture of things and concepts,” said Short. “Using different concepts keeps the students interest level up and they don’t get bored as easily.”

Short has taught all different levels of school including middle and high school but this was his first year to teach elementary school students and he discussed how much he enjoyed the younger students.

“I just love the desire the students have to come to my class each week,” said Short. “Some of them will say ‘I can’t wait to see you tomorrow’ even though they won’t because they only see me once a week so that’s my favorite thing.”

A common sight to see on Tuesday night were students rushing through the halls with their parents trying to find and point out the artwork they had done.

The artwork represented at the art show was kindergarten through second grade students.
