COLUMBIANA – The city of Columbiana has a city cleanup day scheduled for Saturday, June 20 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. The Columbiana Beautification Board is sponsoring this event.

The goal of the city cleanup day is to have several groups of volunteers go out and pick up trash and clean the main roads leading into Columbiana as well as the Main Street area to prepare for Liberty Day celebration that is held on the last Saturday of June.

The first Liberty Day was held in downtown Columbiana in the summer of 1986. The event features patriotic music, local dance groups and fireworks, according to the city of Columbiana’s website.

In addition to the city cleanup day and Liberty day, the Columbiana Beautification Board takes care of the potted plants throughout Columbiana and the signs that welcome people to the city.

They also decorate for different events and holidays, put up the Christmas tree on Main Street, and sponsor the Christmas/Holiday Tour of Homes on the first Saturday in December.

Jennifer Maier, member of the Columbiana Beautification Board, said that days like the clean up day are important because not many cities like Columbiana exist.

“We need to keep Columbiana beautiful,” said Maier.

Maier described the city of Columbiana as “a gem of a city.” She said that the city cleanup day will help keep it that way.

The Beautification Board is looking for 20 to 30 volunteers to help with the clean up day. Anyone who is interested in helping should meet in front of Columbiana City Hall on the morning of June 20.

Trash bags and trash collection sticks will be provided, but volunteers need to bring their own gloves.
