William Clayton Evans
Alabaster
William Clayton Evans, beloved father, devoted husband & grandfather, better known as “Papa” went peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 14.
As a true Southern Gentleman, his kindness and generosity to others will always be remembered by those whose life he touched.
Bill Evans was a native of Birmingham and the son of Fred and Margie Evans and the beloved brother to eight siblings. He was born on April 17, 1933. He grew up on Stacy Hill and graduated in 1951 from Minor High School. He began his 26-year career with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Birmingham at the Southside location near UAB. Later, his career would take him to Orlando and Bartow, Fla., and Greensboro, North Carolina, respectively.
After returning to Birmingham, he started Evans Tire Company in Tarrant. He retired to the community of Alabaster, where he and his wife Tommie McGowan Evans were active members of the First Baptist Church of Alabaster for many years. He loved being in the woods and appreciating the seasons of Gods creations, wood working, landscaping his beautiful home, traveling with his wife and friends, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Tommie McGowan Evans; his three children, Deborah Evans Rossi (Tony Rossi), Richard Clayton Evans (Mary Jane Hagan Evans), and Donna Evans Fitts (Jim Fitts); five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a brother, Glen Evans of Greensboro, North Carolina.
Services will be held Friday, July 17 at The First Baptist Church of Alabaster, 903 3rd Avenue NW, Alabaster, AL 35007. Phone is 663-3531. Family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 10 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m.
