HELENA–A Helena High School senior was recently recognized and appointed for a second time to the distinguished Youth Preparedness Council as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Matt Mayfield also participates in the Helena Fire Explorers program in addition to his work as a council member.

According to a FEMA press release, the council brings together youth leaders from across the country that are interested in advocating on behalf of preparedness and making a difference in their communities. Council members will meet with FEMA staff members throughout their term to provide input on strategies, initiatives and projects.

Mayfield and his father Bill Mayfield were honored at the Helena City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 3, and Bill said that Matt’s reappointment to the council this year is considered a big honor.

“He (Matt) mentioned that there were 15 youth in the country appointed this year and that’s out of hundreds of applications from all over the country,” said Bill. “This is Matthew’s second year, which is very unusual, and part of the reason he was reappointed this year was because of the work he’s done with Helena Fire Explorers with the fire and life safety program that has now been recognized at a national level.”

The Helena Fire Explorers program is a program designated for teenagers and youth who are interested in pursuing a career in fire service.

Matt and many others in the Helena Fire Explorers program participate in numerous competitions, as well as teach the public about fire safety and fire prevention.

“I told the fire chief last week that this is the best explorer group we’ve ever had,” said Helena Councilman Mike Jones. “You guys are staying connected in the community. These fire safety programs that you put on, if you save one life, whether they’re a citizen in Helena or not, it’s worth your efforts.”

Matt was appointed to serve in FEMA Region IV, which is considered the largest region in the country, according to Bill.

Each council member will participate in the Youth Preparedness Council Summit where they will share ideas, opinions and questions about youth disaster preparedness, in addition to attending council meetings held in Washington, D.C.

Matt plans to work on a variety of community service projects this year that includes clearing the trails at Joe Tucker Park and more.
