SAR Cahaba-Coosa Chapter inducts new members

The Alabama Sons of the American Revolution Cahaba-Coosa Chapter inducted three generations of members at its Aug. 16 meeting.

Cahaba-Coosa President John Walker, National Vice President General Mike Wells, past State President and past National Trustee C.W. Posey, Cahaba-Coosa Founding President, past State President and current National Trustee Bobby Joe Seales, Senior Vice President ASSAR and Past Cahaba-Coosa President Glenn Nivens inducted the new members: Braden Lee Roberson, Brian Lee Roberson, Donald Lee Roberson, Grayson Morgan Smith, Larry Lewis Black, David Michael Black and Ethan Caleb Black.

SAR member Robert Robinson Jr. received his SAR lapel pin and sang God Bless America. Sixteen-year-old SAR member Hunter Wilhelm presented a program of American Revolutionary militia clothing, rifles and powder horns assisted by his grandfather and SAR member William Wyatt.

Wilhelm and Wyatt are members of National Powder Horn Club and brought their exhibit of powder horns made from animal horns and collectible muskets.

The chapter was chartered on Aug. 22, 2003 in Pelham and is the only SAR chapter in Shelby County.

“Any man, age 18 years or older, who is a lineal descendent of an ancestor who supported the War for American Independence is eligible for membership. These ancestors are referred to as Revolutionary War Patriots and include those persons who fought in the military and/or militia, who provided supplies to the American cause, who served on political bodies supporting the revolution, who signed oaths of support and similar acts” (see Rootsweb.ancestry.com/~alshelby/cahaba-coosachapter.html).

Gov. Robert J. Bentley was inducted into the chapter at the 10th anniversary dinner at American Village.

Bentley also received the Silver Good Citizenship Medal and Certificate presented by Seales who shares the same fourth great-grandfather, John Horton, who served in the South Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War.

Chapter meetings are held the third Sunday of every month at 2:30 p.m. at the North Shelby Library, 5521 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, Ala. 35124.

The SAR is an educational, historical and patriotic organization.
