ALABASTER – Kingwood Christian celebrated Homecoming Friday with a 20-12 victory over Renaissance Christian Academy, a first-year varsity program from McDonough, Ga. It’s the Lions’ highest-point total of the season and second win of the season.
“Twenty is not a lot, but we’re getting better. We’ve got some good kids, and I think we’re starting to come together as a team,” KCS Coach Sheldon Ward said. “Our defense had a pretty good effort also.”
The Lions gave up an early touchdown on the opening drive, 6-0, but answered with a Chase Inabinett touchdown on the next drive. Darius Morton later broke a long run to help give Kingwood a 13-6 lead at the half.
Kingwood forced a turnover deep in its own territory early in the second half and set up a scoring drive to make it 20-6 on a Wyatt Baker 8-yard touchdown. Charlie Crepps had two extra points in the win.
Renaissance tacked on a late touchdown on a quarterback scramble with 1:45 to play. Kingwood had two touchdowns called back in the game due to penalties.
Kingwood (2-5, 0-3) will travel to Tuscaloosa Academy (5-2, 1-1) on Oct. 16 for its final AISA Class AAA, Region 1 game of the season.
