PELHAM— Pelham’s new cake boss, Cynthia Bertolone, officially opened her bakery in Pelham Oct. 19. Cake Art by Cynthia Bertolone, located at 2154 Pelham Parkway, specializes in cakes and desserts of every kind using freshly cut strawberries, decadent cream cheese frosting, warm chocolate drizzle and more.

“I am excited. It’s scary, but I’m excited,” Bertolone said. “I’m just out there being very artistic with the cakes, especially when it’s a grooms cake, character cake or custom cakes like that where it takes more details.”

With its blue and yellow-stripped walls and display case filled with sweets, Cake Art creates an inviting atmosphere for customers. The case is filled with pre-made strawberry, triple chocolate, zebra, Oreo and caramel cakes.

People can walk in and pick up a six-inch round for $20 or an eight-inch round for $32. There are also cookies, cupcakes and cannolis, as well as cake by the slice.

The chocolate covered strawberry cake is Bertolone’s signature dessert, but her skills don’t stop there. From wedding and grooms cakes, to custom and character cakes, pound cakes or tres leches, she accepts any challenge at her bakery.

Now that the holidays are getting closer, Bertolone said people can start pre-ordering cakes so she can prepare for the demand.

“We wanted to just gift this area, the Pelham area, a good product, a full bakery and a variety of choices and flavors,” she said. “Hopefully, we get the support that we need from the community.”

Bertolone and her husband, Michael, formerly worked at Joe’s Italian, owned by his family. Bertolone had been the pastry chef for several years, learning from her mother-in-law, when she decided she needed to expand.

Her husband helps out with the shop and Bertolone took her assistant, Anna Garcia, with her to help out with the cakes. Cake Art recently also added Candice Foster, 19, who joined the team as an intern from a culinary arts school.

“We’re working together as a team and creating artistic pastries,” Bertolone said. “I’m looking forward to more people coming in and checking us out.”
