PELHAM— Things in Pelham are getting hairy as the police department continues its participation in No Shave November. Six agencies are waging some friendly competition to raise money and awareness for The Wings of Hope Pediatric Foundation.

This is Pelham police and fire departments’ second year participating in the benefit. The Alabaster Police, Helena Police, Montevallo Police and the Hoover Police agencies join them this year.

“It is a great foundation and we are honored, once again, to do the No Shave November,” said Pelham Police Chief Larry Palmer. “It’s such a great group of individuals.”

The Wings of Hope Pediatric Foundation is an organization that provides families with terminally ill children emotional support, meals, house cleaning, lawn care and financial assistance with paying bills. They do this so families can focus on their child and the time they have together.

Lt. Chuck McDonald, watch commander with the Hoover Police Department, said the Hoover department has been pleasantly surprised with all the positive feedback they have received from the public and the officers.

This is the first year Hoover has participated in No Shave November. While all the departments usually work closely together, McDonald said this is a great way to bring them all even closer.

“Everybody is enjoying it. The guys doing it are enjoying it because it’s something different,” he said. “I’ve just been really pleased on how we have embraced this.”

Last year, the departments raised about $14,000 for the Wings of Hope Foundation, and the goal is to raise $20,000 this year, according to Palmer. He said he believes they will break that goal easily.

No Shave November will come to a close when all the departments get together Nov. 30 at Buffalo Wild Wings in Alabaster. They will announce the winning department, and there be competitions for the best beard, the best-dressed and most creative beards.

Last year, Palmer said officers got really into the competitions by dying their beards purple, green or red.

“I think Pelham is going to do it this year,” Palmer said. “We did it last year and we aren’t going to give up the King of the Beards that easily.”
