PELHAM— The specialty fabric store that’s spent the last five years growing its business in Chelsea is now expanding into Pelham. Zig Zig, which will be located at 2156 Pelham Parkway, is scheduled to open in the first week of January.

“I am super excited,” said owner Christy Alverson. “We decided that (because) our business has been so successful on this side of town, we were thinking if we expanded we could serve that other side.”

Zig Zag offers specialty fabrics, designer patterns, notions and machines. Alverson said the Pelham location will offer the same embroidery supplies, quilting supplies, fabrics and more as the Chelsea location.

Alverson said they will also do in-house monograming, heat-pressed custom vinyls and service for Brother machines. After a machine is purchased through the shop, Alverson said they make sure to keep up with its maintenance.

Many of Zig Zag’s customers travel from Alabaster, Helena and Pelham, according to Alverson. She said they were excited to hear about a location opening so close to them.

Alverson said the Pelham location needed a lot of work to be ready for the grand opening. She explained that the whole store needed to be gutted and rebuilt because it had been vacant for a long time.

Flooring will soon be complete in the store, so Alverson said she can start getting all the fixtures, furniture and products moved in.

For now, Alverson said they are focusing on getting Christmas orders complete and getting the new Zig Zag location open.

“We’ve been surprised and elated that it has done so well,” Alverson said, referring to her and her husband. “We’ve increased the size of this store, I don’t know how many times. We are just taking this one step at a time and seeing where it takes us.”
