CALERA – Both the Thompson boys and girls basketball teams picked up their second in-county wins of the season over Calera on Dec. 15. The girls, ranked as the No. 3 team in the state in class 7A as of Dec. 16, advanced to 10-1 with an easy 60-41 win while the boys doubled up the Eagles by a score of 90-44.

The Lady Warriors never vastly outscored Calera in any one quarter, but rather slowly and steadily built an insurmountable lead. A 12-7 lead after the first quarter turned into a 30-15 lead at the half, which eventually led to the lopsided final.

Jordan LeNoir, who has led Thompson all season, led all scorers with 26 points and 12 rebounds for another double-double while Brittany Grice added another 15 points and eight rebounds. Tyesha Haynes had 25 points for Calera, good for 61 percent of the Lady Eagles’ total production.

The boys, ranked as the No. 8 team in 7A as of Dec. 16, put their foot on the throttle early against Calera and did not let up at any point. The Warriors scored at least 23 points in each of the first three quarters while never allowing Calera to score more than 12. A 49-23 halftime score effectively sealed the deal, and the second half was more of a formality than anything else as the Warriors moved to 7-4.

Jamarcus Green, Tresmine Taylor and Jaylin Wilson had 16 points a piece for Thompson on the night while CJ Smith had 14 and OJ Smith chipped in 11 for Calera.

Both Thompson and Calera will be in action later this week in the Shelby County Tournament.
