The second week of basketball rankings have been released by the ASWA, and there are still a number of county schools that made an appearance on the lists. The only team from last week’s poll to fall out was the boys’ team from Coosa Valley, while every other team that was ranked either stayed stagnant or moved up in the rankings.

Spain Park held down the No. 1 ranking in 7A for the second consecutive week. The Jaguars now stand at 8-3 and have begun to turn into the truly dominant team many expected them to be before the season started. Vincent is the next highest-ranked boys team in the county, as the Yellow Jackets have moved up to the No. 2 team in class 2A after beating Thorsby and Fayetteville this week by an average of 31 points to move to 8-2 on the year.

Pelham, ranked as the No. 6 team in the first rankings in class 6A, is now the fourth-ranked team in the class. The Panthers now sport a 7-3 record and beat Chelsea by 32 points this week and was the only other boys’ team besides Vincent to move up in the rankings.

Montevallo stayed at No. 4 in class 4A after moving to 11-1 in the last week with wins over Tarrant, Calera and Oak Grove in the last week. Thompson moved back one spot to No. 8 in class 7A as well after moving to 7-4 with an easy win over Calera.

The Lady Warriors remained at No. 3 in class 7A after moving to 10-1. Thompson beat Calera easily this week in a county-versus-county matchup to improve its record and keep pace with Hazel Green and Jeff Davis, the two schools ranked ahead of the Lady Warriors. Hazel Green is the only team this year which has beaten Thompson. Coosa Valley also moved to 5-2 as the Lady Rebels moved to the No. 8 team in the AISA, and were the only other girls’ team in the county to be ranked.

The Lady Lions of Briarwood also moved to 9-1 this week and received consideration in the competitive 6A poll.
