FROM STAFF REPORTS

PELHAM— Valley Elementary School students created the Statue of Liberty’s torch using canned foods for the “Can Do Good” Social Design Competition.

Students organized a canned food drive, planned the torch’s structure and built the torch using the collected cans.

First the students voted on their theme, choosing the Statue of Liberty’s torch complemented by the letters “VES.” Then when the structure was dismantled, the canned foods were donated to Oak Mountain Missions.

To vote for VES’s entry in the “Can Do Good” competition, visit Facebook.com/CanDoGood and like the VES entry in the K-8 division. Voting is open until Jan. 11.
