HELENA–The Helena Police Department and investigators concluded an investigation of a reported robbery that was proven to be false, according to a press release provided by the department.

On the night of Dec. 21 at approximately 9:30 p.m., Helena Police patrol units and investigators responded to a report of a robbery at the BP station at Helena Parkway and Shelby County 58 in Helena.

Upon police arrival, the gas station clerk gave several conflicting stories about the details of the crime.

After several hours of following leads, conducting interviews and collecting evidence, it was determined that the robbery report was false, according to the press release.

The gas station clerk was charged with one count of false reporting and third degree theft of property for allegedly reporting the false robbery.

The investigation is ongoing but the Helena Police Department said it wants to eliminate rumors and misinformation stemming from the incident.
