After heavy rain caused flooding throughout the county on Christmas day, water has subsided, according to Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Debbie Sumrall.

Sumrall reported that the SCSO is not blocking off or watching any areas, so it appears the floodwater has receded.

A representative with the Columbiana Police Department also confirmed that the streets and parking lots in Columbiana are clear now.

“For the most part its draining away pretty good, now,” said Police Chief Lamar Vick.

Vick said he had received reports of flooding near Town Creek Apartments, the CVS parking lot, Piggly Wiggly, First US Bank, Howard Tire Service and the Rescue 88 building in Columbiana on Dec. 25.

Although the flooding has subsided, Vick said there were homes damaged in Hidden Spring neighborhood by water buildup in their basements and some of the apartments at Town Creek were also damaged.

He said no injuries related to the flooding had been reported as of Dec. 26.

Some repairs will have to be made through the street department in Columbiana next week, and Vick said the city is currently having some issues with the sewers.

“Anytime you have rain like that you have a lot of sewer problems, so the sewer guys are out there doing what they can,” Vick said. “Hopefully next week everything will be back to normal.”
