As the year draws to a close, we take a look back at Helena’s biggest headlines from July to December 2015.

July

Man rescued after river kayaking accident

A Pelham man is rescued after becoming stranded on the Cahaba River after suffering a broken ankle.

August

Helena police chief retires

After 34 years of service to the city of Helena and the community, Helena Police Chief Doug Jones decides to retire from the police force citing health concerns.

September

Fire Explorers host first-ever competition

On Sept. 12, the Helena Sports Complex hosts 10 different fire departments from around the southeast bringing a total of more than 100 competitors to Helena.

October

Welcome, chief

Pete Folmar is introduced as Helena’s new police chief.

November

Helena Parkway renaming approved by council

In an effort to further market the city of Helena, the Helena City Council approves the renaming of Shelby County 52 and 17 within the Helena city limits to Helena Parkway.

December

Jack’s celebrates grand opening

A grand opening ceremony for the new Jack’s fast food restaurant is held on Friday, Dec. 4.
