Montevallo wins sixth straight

MONTEVALLO – Montevallo senior Bryant Orange finished two assists shy of a triple-double while leading the Falcons to a 3-0 start in Peach Belt Conference play with a 74-64 win over visiting Georgia Southwestern.
The Hurricanes got off to a hot start, and a three-pointer by Damien Leonard gave them an early 7-2 lead.
A triple from Orange with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half gave the Falcons their first lead at 9-7. Montevallo led 21-14 following another three by sophomore Vaughn Autry with 9:02 left in the half. The Falcons’ largest lead in the opening half came at the 2:48 mark following a jumper by Orange, which gave Montevallo a 36-28 advantage.
The Falcons carried a 38-34 lead into the locker room at halftime following a 6-2 run to end the half by the Hurricanes.
Cade Towers made a layup with 18:28 remaining in the game to give Georgia Southwestern a 40-39 lead, but it turned out to be the Hurricanes’ final lead in the contest.
Montevallo led by as many as 12 points in the final moments following a dunk by junior Talan Whitaker with 1:44 remaining in the game.
STAT OF THE GAME
Three Falcons registered a double-double in the win over the Hurricanes. Orange posted 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with eight assists. Whitaker provided 12 points and 14 rebounds, while senior Tevin Worthy contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS
Whitaker grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in the win against Georgia Southwestern while Orange tied his career high with eight assists.
