Harpersville police received a report of an armed robbery at the Harpersville Motel on Sept. 20, 2015. According to Harpersville Police Chief Jimmy Macon, two suspects entered the motel and robbed the manager.

“We missed them by just a few minutes,” Macon said, noting the suspects had fled shortly before police arrived at the scene.

Although the suspects attempted to destroy the motel’s security camera, Harpersville police were able to obtain footage of the two suspects, and the manager positively identified the suspects, Macon said.

The two suspects were “on the run” from law enforcement, Macon said, until one suspect was apprehended on Jan. 3.

Sylvester Cadre Hatley, 22, of Jonesboro, Ark., was arrested and charged with one felony count of first-degree robbery and one felony count of first-degree theft of property.

According to court documents, Hatley was reoprtedly armed with a revolver during the Sept. 20 robbery, and allegedly fled the scene with cash and a cellphone valued at $7,000.

Hatley was arrested in Childersburg following a tip that he was at a local hotel, Macon said.

Hatley was booked into the Shelby County Jail on Jan. 4, and is being held under bonds totaling $120,000.

First-degree robbery is a Class A felony, carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. First-degree theft of property is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Police are continuing to look for the second robbery suspect.
