CHELSEA – Two unplanned evacuations at Chelsea Middle School gained attention from the community on social media Jan. 5 as residents reported seeing fire trucks at the school.
The first evacuation took place after a student accidentally bumped into a fire alarm at the school, prompting Chelsea Fire and Rescue to respond and students and faculty to exit the building, according to ChMS Principal Andrew Gunn.
The second evacuation occurred during a basketball game in the gym, he said.
“It was just when the heater kicked on in one part of the building, there was some dust on the vent,” Gunn said. “It kind of burned that dust off and made a little smoke that triggered the fire alarm. We evacuated just to be safe.”
