Warriors pick up first area win

Thompson won its first game of the new year and first area game as well on Jan. 12 when the Warriors beat Tuscaloosa County on the road by eight points, 57-49. Michael Freeman and Jamon Staffney each had 13 points for Thompson while Demonte Caffey added 12 as Thompson advanced to 12-8 (1-2) on the season. Freeman also added seven boards as well.

 

Spain Park blows past Vestavia

In the first matchup since Vestavia shocked Spain Park in the first round of the 2014-15 7A Area 6 tournament back in February of 2015, when the Rebels beat the Jaguars thanks to a four-point play with under five seconds left, Spain Park came out firing. The Jaguars were not about to let Vestavia have a chance in this one, as they beat the Rebels 80-47 behind 60 combined points from Austin Wiley, Jamal Johnson and Justin Brown. Wiley finishd with yet another double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds as Spain Park moved to 14-6 (3-0).

 

Vincent continues to impress

Vincent held Fayetteville to just two points in the first quarter and four points in the fourth quarter as the Yellow Jackets rolled to a 70-31 win. EJ Datcher had 14 points and 12 rebounds while Wes King led all scorers with 18 points. Vincent moved to 16-4 (3-0) with the win.

 

Oak Mountain falls in heartbreaker to Hoover

Hoover’s Kevy Eason hit a three-pointer with five seconds left in the fourth quarter to lift the Bucs over visiting Oak Mountain by a final of 62-60, moving Hoover to 3-0 in 7A Area 5 and dropping Oak Mountain to 14-7 (2-1). Payton Youngblood led the Eagles with 16 points.

 

Pelham boys fall to Homewood

The Pelham boys basketball Panthers lost for just the second time in three weeks when they traveled to take on 6A Area 9 rival Homewood and fell 57-49. The Panthers held a one-point advantage heading into the half before being outscored by nine in the second half. Alex Reese poured in 27 points in the losing effort as the Panthers fell to 12-7 (2-1)

 

Lady Eagles fall to Hoover

Oak Mountain managed only seven first-half points as the Lady Eagles fell to Hoover on Jan. 12 by a final of 44-27. Jailyn Maddox of Hoover led all scorers with 11 points as Oak Mountain fell to 7-9 (0-3).

 

Spain Park girls win big

The Lady Jaguars advanced to 11-8 (2-1) after beating Vestavia Hills by 33 points on Jan. 12. The win was the biggest of the year since Spain Park’s first game of the season, when it beat Minor by 39 points, 73-34. Arielle Parks and Skyla Knight each had 10 points to lead Spain Park.

 

Thompson girls drop area game in Tuscaloosa

After winning 12 of their first 13, the Thompson Lady Warriors have now lost three of their last four and have fallen to 1-2 in area play after getting beat at Tuscaloosa County on Jan. 12 by a final of 48-38. Thompson moved to 16-4 (1-2) on the season with the loss.
