HELENA–The Helena girls basketball team bounced back from a loss to Calera last week and grabbed another win in area play against Jemison on Thursday, Jan. 14, routing the Panthers 54-19.

Jordan Jones of Helena finished with 21 points in the game to lead all scorers and a consistent second half pushed Helena to victory.

“Our consistency in the second half I was pleased with because that’s the thing that I was big on this week,” said Helena head coach Alan Skinner. “We can’t be in a constant state of riding the wave of intensity here and then move down, focus is here and then goes down. Our consistency was much better though.”

Helena led Jemison 33-14 at halftime and in the third quarter, the Huskies went on a 19-0 run while holding the Panthers scoreless to lead 52-14.

In the program’s second season, Helena is in position to potentially host the area tournament or finish as the runner-up.

Skinner was proud of how well his team has progressed this season.

“I told the girls tonight, for them to even have themselves in a position to even host a regional tournament after last year and with me being a first year coach, that speaks volumes about how hard those girls work and how hard they play,” said Skinner.

Numerous Helena players saw playing time and contributed in the victory. Mekhi Mayfield finished with nine points, Jenn Brown finished with six points and Mary Laatsch and Aszah Preuc both had five points in the game.
