Montevallo girls win area title handily

The Lady Bulldogs of Montevallo did not struggle in the slightest to claim the 4A Area 7 title on Thursday night, beating West Blocton soundly by a final of 61-12. Montevallo will now host Bibb County in the sub-regional round on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.

 

Oak Mountain boys move on to area finals

The Oak Mountain basketball Eagles jumped out to an astonishingly impressive 26-2 lead at halftime against Tuscaloosa County in the first round of the 7A Area 5 tournament on Thursday night, and won 47-38. The Eagles (23-7), who won the regular season area title and subsequently the right to host the area tournament, were led by Will Stephenson’s 11 points. Oak Mountain will play Hoover in the area finals on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

 

Spain Park advances to area championship

A season after getting shocked in the first round of the 7A Area 6 tournament, the Jaguars of Spain Park made sure their season didn’t end prematurely for a second consecutive season as they beat Hewitt-Trussville 73-47. Austin Wiley led Spain Park with 19 points, seven boards and two blocks while Jamal Johnson chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Spain Park will play Mountain Brook in the area tournament final on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

 

Thompson’s season ends at hands of Hoover

After splitting the regular season series with Hoover, Thompson faced off against the Bucs for the third time this season in the first round of the 7A Area 5 tournament, but came up short, losing 65-61. Thompson held a 42-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Warriors were outscored by Hoover 27-19 in the final period, and lost by four. Michael Freeman led the Warriors with 23 points, and Thompson ended the season with a 15-13 record.

 

Pelham beats Briarwood, ends Lions’ season

The Pelham basketball Panthers completed their three-game sweep of Briarwood on Thursday night when it mattered most, in the area tournament. Pelham beat Briarwood by a final of 54-39, and was led by Alex Reese’s 26 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Allison also chipped in 22 points and five boards, as the two combined for all but six of Pelham’s points. The Panthers will play Homewood in the 6A Area 9 championship at Homewood on Saturday at 5 p.m.
