Vincent wins thriller

After opening up a slim, 29-25 halftime lead over Asbury in the 2A sub-regional round, the Yellow Jackets were outscored in the third quarter by six, and went into the fourth trailing by two, 40-38. After a back-and-forth fourth quarter, Vincent was down 48-47 with less than five seconds left. Terrell Calhoun, with Vincent’s season on the line, pulled up for a three and nailed it with 1.3 second left to give the Yellow Jackets a 50-48 win, which sent Vincent back to the Sweet Sixteen yet again. EJ Datcher finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Wes King had 13 points and seven boards to help lead Vincent to the nail biting win. Vinent will play Section in the first round of the Northeast regional tournament at Jacksonville state on Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m.

 

Pelham handles Opelika

After losing to Homewood in the 6A Area 9 finals, Pelham had to travel to Opelika in the 6A sub-regional round to play Opelika for a chance at the Sweet Sixteen. Alex Reese had a whopping 39 points and 25 boards, as the Panthers, behind Reese’s Herculean effort and Justin Allison’s 23 points, beat host Opelika by a final of 67-49. With the win, Pelham advances to the 6A Sweet Sixteen and will play Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Alabama State. The trip to the regional tournament will be Pelham’s first since 1997.

 

Montevallo holds off Holt

Down 34-27 entering the second half, Montevallo outscored visiting Holt in the second half by 11 to win 64-61 and advance to the 4A Sweet Sixteen. Tae’ Smith had 23 points and 11 board to lead the Bulldogs while Undreaz Lilly had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Tavarus Hall had 13 points and eight rebounds, as the three combined for all but 10 of Montevallo’s points. The Bulldogs will now play Handley in the first round of the 4A Central regional tournament, which will take place on Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at Alabama State.

 

Helena falls to Sylacauga

The Huskies fell on the road to Sylacauga by a final of 70-56 on Feb. 16, ending their season in the 5A sub-regional round.
