CHELSEA – A 15-year-old Chelsea High School student was arrested Feb. 19 for allegedly making what authorities are calling terrorist threats.
Before school started on the morning of Feb. 19, a parent notified the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office of a student threatening to “blow up a classroom,” according to an SCSO press release.
Law enforcement officers quickly secured the school within minutes of receiving notification of the threat.
Officers and school staff then determined the student’s identity and that the student was absent, the release read.
Officers located the student at his or her home, and the student “admitted to making the threats, although did not have the means to carry out the threat,” according to the release.
The student was arrested and is being held at the Shelby County Juvenile Facility.
Making a terrorist threat is a Class C felony.
“With the help of school administrators, we quickly determined the students and faculty of Chelsea High School were in no immediate danger,” Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego wrote in the release. “Despite the fact this young person did not have the capabilities to carry out the threat, it was taken seriously by school staff and the deputy assigned to Chelsea High School. I want to thank the County Commission and Board of Education who continue to support the Safe Schools Initiative program.”
