PELHAM— The Commercial Development Authority of Pelham contributed $5,000 to the Shelby County Business Alliance in support of its efforts in lifting the ban on Sunday sales in Shelby County.

This expenditure came after a decision by the CDA at a special called meeting Feb. 24 at Pelham City Hall.

The resolution, which passed unanimously, stated that the Commercial Development Authority recognized the importance of lifting the ban on Sunday sales as well as the positive economic impact.

Lifting the ban, according to the resolution, would result in an increase in direct and indirect sales, increased business earnings and additional employment opportunities in Pelham and in Shelby County.

CDA chairman Leonard Glynn Jr., stated that the CDA determined it serves the public purpose to support the Shelby County Business Alliance in its efforts to educate and inform the citizens of the economic impact of lifting the ban.

“Part of our goal as the CDA is to bring new businesses, retail businesses, into the city of Pelham, and commercial development,” Glynn said. “We are hoping by helping support this, we’ll help bring some newer, bigger restaurants in that are willing to open up, who have told us before they won’t do it as long as they don’t have Sunday sales.”

Lifting the ban on Sunday sales in Shelby County will be included on the ballot in the March 1 primary election.
