Pelham, Briarwood compete in Battle Royale

MOUNTAIN BROOK – Both Pelham and Briarwood competed in the Mountain Brook Five Team Battle Royale, which in fact had six teams compete and score points. The Lions and Panthers competed along with Homewood, Mountain Brook, Shades Mountain Christian and Hewitt Trussville. The Pelham girls finished second and the boys finished fourth while Briarwood finished fifth in the girls and boys meets.

The meet did not have traditional events like the 100 or 200-meter dash, instead included events such as the 150-meter and 500-meter dash. Pelham had three girls win individual events in Mary Grace Strozier, Erin Hines and Alex Ladewig. Strozier won the 2,000-meter run, Hines won the 200-meter run as well as the javelin throw and Ladewig won the pole vault. Emorie Long placed second in the javelin throw behind Hines, Ayala Seaborn placed second in the discus throw, Amelia Guthrie and Melanie Taylor placed second and third in the pole vault behind Ladewig, Jordan Allison placed second in the 200-meter hurdles behind Hines, Taylor also placed second in the 80-meter hurdles and Madilyn Dubose placed second in the 500-meter run to round out the leaders for the Lady Panthers.

For the girls from Briarwood, Morgan Hutchinson placed fifth in the javelin throw, the girls 4×100-meter team placed third and Katie Green placed fourth in the 150-meter dash.

The Pelham boys placed fourth out of six boy teams. Dorian Austin, who placed first in the 300-meter dash, beating Jake Diggs of Hewitt-Trussville by .008 seconds, led the Panthers. The 4×100-meter team finished first as well. Donovan Ross and Kelvin Fields finished second and third in the 150-meter dash, the 4×300-meter team finished third and Dorian Tolbert finished second in the shot put to lead Pelham.

Jonathan Hill, who finished second in the 200-meter hurdles, led the Briarwood boys. The 4×300-meter team finished fourth, Grant Dowlen finished fourth in the pole vault, Daniel Johnston finished fourth in the discus throw and Banks Nash, Thomas Collier and Ashton Domingue finished third through fifth in the javelin throw to round out the scorers for Briarwood.
