James William “Buddy” Abernathy, age 77, of Calera, passed away Friday, March 4 at home with family by his side.

Buddy was a member of Montevallo Church of God and served as clerk for 30 years at Brantleyville Church of God. Buddy always had a corny joke to tell and loved to pick on his friends and family.  He was laid back and patient, and loved Alabama football.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ola Abernathy; wife, Doris Abernathy; sister, Jean Massey; and brother, David Abernathy.

He is survived by his daughters, Leah Bosch (Bert), Sherry Norris (Ronald), Maria Kiinstler, Robin Rose (Chuck), Juanita “Pinkey” Coggins, Deanna Hill (Mark), and Darlene Abernathy; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jessie Faye Bunn, Alice Holsomback (Bobby), Frances Hafer (Terry), and Sue Hutchinson (Ray); and brother, Roger Abernathy (Penny); and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

His funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 8 at 3 p.m. at Montevallo Church of God, with visitation beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Jeff Holsomback will officiate and burial will be at Ryan Cemetery.

The family requests that in his memory, all guests wear their favorite team colors.
