Spain Park girls wins five games in two days

HOOVER – The Spain Park Lady Jaguars softball team moved to 11-5 on the year after winning five out of six games over a two-day span in the 2016 Jag Classic. Spain Park started 5-0 in the tournament before falling to Sumiton Christian in the semifinals of the tournament by a final of 5-0.

Spain Park beat Clay Chalkville by a final score of 7-3, Priceville by a final score of 5-3, Arab by a final scored of 8-1, Austin by a final score of 5-3 and Tuscaloosa County by a final score of 7-6 to reach the semifinals of the Jaguar Classic before losing to Sumiton Christian.

Through the first five games, as they have been all season, the Lady Jaguars were led by Mary Katherine Tedder, who had eight hits and 10 RBIs in Spain Park’s five wins in the tournament.

Against Sumiton Christian in the semifinals of the tournament, Spain Park gave up four runs in the first inning en route to the loss. Kate Campbell, Caroline Kendrick and Annabelle Wildra took the mound for Spain Park on the day, and gave up cumulatively just four hits and five runs, four of which were earned. However, Spain Park also managed just one hit on the day, as Tedder went 1-for-2 against Sumiton Christian’s ace. Spain Park advanced to 11-5 after the tournament, and will now turn its attention to Mountain Brook, which the Lady Jaguars play on March 10 at home at 5 p.m.

Kate Campbell pitched in five of the six games, throwing a total of 16 innings. Campbell gave up just two earned runs in the first five games before giving up three to Sumiton Christian.
