FROM STAFF REPORTS

PELHAM— Residents looking to rid themselves of bulk trash items can do so April 2 on Trash Taxi’s first Heavy Trash Day of the year.

According to a post on Pelhamonline.com, all items must be placed curbside by 6 a.m. no further than four feet from the curb and away from overhead obstacles. No item may weigh more than 300 pounds or be more than six-foot long.

The post lists several items that will not be accepted: refrigerators, televisions, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, hot water heaters, tires, oil, batteries, engine blocks, window ac units, riding lawnmowers, bug spray, paint cans with liquid paint, needles or medical waste.

Trash Taxi will also not accept hazardous, radioactive, volatile, corrosive, highly flammable, explosive, biomedical, infectious, bio-hazardous, toxic waste or characteristic hazardous waste as defined by federal, state, provincial or local law or any other regulated waste.

Accepted items consist of: grills with gas or propane tank removed, push lawnmowers with gas tank removed, furniture, mattresses, lumber, general debris, vacuum cleaners, auto interior parts, picnic tables, dismantled swing sets, bicycles and items of that nature.

Paint cans will be accepted, but must be set aside from other heavy items for inspection. The tops of the cans must be removed and the paint must either be hardened or dry. If the pain is liquid it must be filled with cat litter.

If an item can be recycled or donated, the post states that those options should be attempted before the items are discarded.

The second Heavy Trash Day pickup will be Oct. 1.
