PELHAM— With a growing need for its programs and services, The Arc of Shelby County is hosting its first Uncorked and Uncapped Auction Tuesday, May 3 at the Pelham Civic Complex.

“The need for our services is growing,” said Director of Development Tery Young.

“We do receive some funding from the state, but to enhance our programs and to support our workshops we host for free in the area, we need fundraisers.”

The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with complimentary beer and wine tastings, live musical entertainment, snacks and a silent auction, Young said. Then the program and the live auction, led by Shelby County resident Ken Jackson, will begin at 7:45 p.m.

The main featured item for the live auction is a dinner for two with Shelby County Manager Alex Dudchock, and Young said there will be several other items, such as golf packages, jewelry, a set of tires, cook books, a stay at Ross Bridge and a one-year family membership to the McWane Science Center.

Young said The Arc of Shelby County’s board of directors and the junior council usually host separate fundraising events, but Uncorked and Uncapped combines the efforts of both groups.

“The Arc has a board of directors and then we have a junior council, and we wanted to do an event that incorporates both groups,” Young said. “So we thought the auction was a way to engage both groups of individuals.”

As Uncorked and Uncapped is the first event of its kind for The Arc of Shelby County, Young said she’s not sure how many people to expect, but she hopes to have between 75 and 100 people.

Young said the council and board have been working hard to put the auction together, and to make it fun for all involved.

“They’re working together really closely, so it’s a different relationship that started between them,” Young said. “They are getting to know each other more and appreciate what the other (group) has done in the past.”

Tickets for the Uncorked and Uncapped Auction are $75 for individuals and $100 for couples. Dress is business casual.

The day following the auction, The Arc of Shelby County is hosting the Swinging for Achievement Golf Tournament at Ballantrae Golf Club. Registration begins at 11 a.m. on May 4, and the tournament begins at 1 p.m. Cost is $150 per player or $600 for a foursome.

Both events are presented by SouthWest Water Company.
