Police identify victim in Helena hit-and-run

HELENA– A 33-year-old Helena woman was pronounced dead at the scene after the Helena Police Department responded to a fatal hit-and-run incident the afternoon of Monday, May 2.

At approximately 1:45 p.m., Helena Police received a call in reference to a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle near Golden Rule Barbeque in the 4200 block of Helena Parkway.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 33-year-old Helena resident Holley Myrick in the roadway suffering from severe injuries, and witnesses stated that the vehicle that struck her had fled the scene.

Helena Fire Medics immediately began efforts to stabilize and transport the victim to the hospital via Lifesaver helicopter, but Myrick died at the scene.

Helena officers immediately relayed the information to neighboring agencies and a fire marshal with the Alabaster Fire Department observed the suspect’s vehicle off First Avenue West in Alabaster.

When the marshal attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect fled and eluded him.

Helena police officers assisted Alabaster officers in the search for the suspect while the Shelby County Traffic Homicide Task Force initiated an investigation on the scene.

At approximately 3 p.m., an Alabaster police officer located the suspect, 28-year-old Bessemer resident Damian Lamar Jackson, and the vehicle in a driveway in Alabaster and immediately took him into custody.

Helena officers then transported the suspect to the Helena Police Department where detectives began questioning.
