Briarwood splits tri-match at Homewood

On Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Briarwood Christian Lady Lions traveled to Homewood High School to take part in a tri-match with Homewood and nearby Vestavia Hills. The Lady Lions beat the host team in their opening game of tri-match play in come back fashion, recovering from dropping the first set 17-25 to win the next two sets 26-24, 15-8. After the thrilling first win, Briarwood dropped its second match to Vestavia 25-17, 25-13. Briarwood moved to 2-1 in regular season games, and is now 4-4 on the year.

 

Chelsea downs Clay-Chalkville

The Chelsea Lady Hornets continued their prodigious early season pace on Tuesday with a big win over a solid Clay-Chalkville team on the road. The Lady Cougars are regarded as one of the top volleyball teams in the 6A classification this season, and with the 3-2 win Chelsea notched over them on Tuesday, the Lady Jags took another step toward the top of the 6A ladder. With the 3-2 win, Chelsea moved to 8-1, with its’ only loss coming to Auburn in the finals of the Smiths Station Invitational.

 

Helena splits tri-match at Tuscaloosa County

After a slow start to the 2016 season, the Lady Huskies finally notched a win over Tuscaloosa County High School in a tri-match with Tuscaloosa County and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa on Tuesday. The tri-match came after Helena had taken part in the Juanita Boddie Invitational at Hoover High School, but had failed to win a match against some of the top 7A schools in the state. Helena lost to Hillcrest in the first game of tri-match play on Tuesday 2-0 before beating the host school by the same margin to move to 1-5.

 

Lady Bulldogs handle Jemison

Montevallo continued its’ early-season hot streak on Tuesday with a convincing 3-1 win over Jemison. After the Lady Bulldogs dropped the first set 23-25, Montevallo rallied to win the next three soundly by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-22. Takila Hill led all hitters with 13 kills and also had two blocks while Madeline Griffin had seven kills and two blocks and Georgia Hughes led the setters with 17 assists. Montevallo moved to 2-0 with the win.

 

Pelham defeats Ramsay 3-0

The Lady Panthers of Pelham moved to 3-5 on the young volleyball season on Tuesday with an easy 3-0 win over Ramsay. The win snapped a three-match losing skid for Pelham, which lost its’ final three games of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament in Montgomery on Aug. 27. Pelham beat the Lady Rams in straight sets 25-16, 25-19, 25-13, and was led by Sarah Guthrie’s eight kills, Georgia Stonicher’s 26 assists and Grace Nolen’s 10 digs.

 

Spain Park beats Thompson

After taking part in the Juanita Boddie Invitational over the weekend of Aug. 26, the Spain Park Lady Jags were back in action on Aug. 30 as they hosted in-county opponent Thompson. The match was Thompson’s first of the season, while Spain Park had already built a 4-2 record heading into the contest. It was Spain Park who got the best of Thompson in this matchup, as the Lady Jags downed the Lady Warriors in straight sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20. Ellie Norton led the Lady Jags with 24 assists, Marlee Johnson had 10 kills and six digs and Karlee Moss had eight kills as well to lead Spain Park, which moved to 5-2.
