Jessie Griffin Stone
Montevallo

Jessie Griffin Stone of Montevallo, formerly of Marion, died Sunday, Sept. 11.

Mrs. Stone was born in Lawley to Ben F. and Rena Kelley Griffin on Sept. 29, 1925, and was raised in this East Perry County community where she attended Caffee School and afterward Perry County High School. Upon graduation from high school in 1943, she moved to the Birmingham area where she worked for Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company at the Ensley plant in the drafting department. She married W. Otis Stone of Sprott on April 4, 1945, when he was on furlough from his World War II deployment in Newfoundland.

Mrs. Stone lived with her family in Marion for 26 years before moving in 1972 to Montevallo. She retired in September 1990 from Allied Lime of Alabaster after 17 years of service. She was a member of Wilton Baptist Church where she had served as Sunday School teacher, choir member, and church treasurer. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Montevallo Chapter #434.

Mrs. Stone was known for her excellent cooking and handwork, her work ethic, and her devotion to family. Simple things were a source of joy to Mrs. Stone. Viewing lovely flowers, hearing gospel music, caring for her dog, or watching squirrels play always brought her pleasure. She loved the Lord and found solace in His word.

Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Vaughn King and Woodrow Griffin; and two sisters, Doris G. Gay and Annie Ruth G. McReynolds.

She was blessed to be one of the five “Griffin sisters” of whom much loving support was always given and received. For years the sisters enjoyed traveling together.
She is survived by a daughter and two sons, Janice S. Wicker of Hoover, Allan D. Stone and Alton B. Stone of Montevallo; sisters, Ruby G. Nichols of Marion and Margie G. Hatcher of Montevallo; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors in the chapel at Rockco Funeral Home in Montevallo on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m., with the funeral following in the chapel at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Stone will be laid to rest by her late husband in Montevallo Cemetery with Rockco directing.

Pallbearers are Brian Harrison, Corin Harrison, Jr., Matthew Johnson, John Jones, Jay McGaughy and Jimmy Stewart.
