ALABASTER – No injuries were reported, but a brick sign in front of Alabaster’s Creek View Elementary School was destroyed in an early morning wreck in front of the school on Oct. 4.
The wreck happened at about 7 a.m. when two vehicles collided on Shelby County 17 near the entrance to the school. One of the vehicles – a black Toyota 4-Runner – collided with a brick and cinderblock “Creek View Elementary” sign in the median of the school’s entrance.
The driver and multiple children were in the 4-Runner when it struck the sign, but no injuries were reported in the wreck.
“The sign is just brick and mortar and the cars are just steel. There were several young children in the car, and thankfully nobody got injured,” said Alabaster City Schools Operations Coordinator Jeff Atkins. “That’s what really matters.”
Atkins said the school system likely will have to replace the sign because of the damage, and said at about 8:05 a.m. on Oct. 4 he was not yet sure when the replacement project would move forward.
“The damage is pretty significant,” he said. “We will definitely have to replace it, but we’re not sure yet if we will have to replace the foundation and everything.”
