NORTH SHELBY – One of Alabama’s largest homes will be sold at auction and could go for less than half of its listed price.
It will still cost the buyer at least $4 million.
Concierge Auctions announced that the 27-acre European estate called “Chateau Montagel,” which is located in Shoal Creek, will sell to the highest bidder in an auction beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 26.
The 54,000-square-foot compound at 7 Montagel Way that features equestrian facilities and a guitar-shaped sprawling driveway, among other amenities, is listed for $9.9 million.
The property will sell at or above the $4 million reserve in cooperation with Pam Ausley of Re/Max Southern Homes.
Chateau Montagel is a 15-bedroom, 19-bathroom estate that boasts a grand foyer with dual staircases, commercial grade elevator, frescoed ceilings, crystal chandeliers and 12 fireplaces.
The residence is also equipped with a home theater that seats 25 people, a billiard room, 2,000-bottle wine cellar, 12-car garage and an equestrian center with four pastures.
Outdoors, the home offers an indoor pool with a waterfall and jacuzzi and twin pool-side cabana suites, a guesthouse, a six-stall barn with living quarters and an outdoor horseback riding ring.
Nestled in the Jones Valley between Oak and Double Oak mountains, Shoal Creek is home to the Jack Nicklaus-designed Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club.
Concierge Auctions has sold other high-profile Southern homes before, including University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban’s 10,000-square-foot estate in the North Georgia mountains on the shores of Lake Burton.
The mansion, owned by former MedPartners CEO Larry House, was designed by architect Bill Shepherd and is fitted with vintage lighting. Detail work was done by the International Fine Arts Conservation Studios, the same group that worked on Buckingham Palace and the Biltmore.
The home topped the U.S. housing market as the largest house on the market in February 2014. RealtySouth listed the house at $9.9 million, a $4 million reduction from the February 2014 asking price.
The Shelby County property tax database lists the assessed value of the 7 Montagel Way mansion as $12,033,860.
