Helena Collegiate Institute 1878. Helena has a rich history of education going back before the Civil War.
The first school stood on ground now enclosed by the Helena Cemetery.
This structure burned before 1878.
The succeeding school was built on land donated by John Davidson where the present elementary school now stands.
This building, pictured above, opened in 1878 and burned in the 1880s.
The next Helena High School, built on the same site, was demolished around 1923 to make way for the present elementary school.
Identified people in the photo above include Rev. J.H.B. Hall standing on left, Mrs. F.J. Tyler seated on left, Rev. F.J. Tyler in center and Ida Jemison seated on right.
