Five county wrestling teams compete in Over the Mountain Duals

CHELSEA – Five county wrestling teams including Chelsea, Spain Park, Thompson, Pelham and Oak Mountain competed in the Over the Mountain Duals at Chelsea High School on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Thompson, who has one of the best wrestling teams in the country, went 2-0 at the event after they took down Chelsea 58-21 and Vestavia Hills 42-33. Undefeated for Thompson were Chandler Akins (113) with two pins, Sam Latona (106), Emmanuel Oliver (120) with one pin, Gabe Hixenbaugh (126) with one pin and Nathan Roberts (132) with two pins.

The Spain Park wrestlers split at their matches at the event with a 48-30 win over Mountain Brook and 54-24 loss to Oak Mountain. Undefeated for the Jags were Jack Rivers (106) with a pin and a forfeit; Gaven Pudlik (126) with two decisions; Manny Allen (195) with a decision and a pin; Jaxon Bast (220 and 285) with a pin and a forfeit; and Ryan Campbell (220 and 285) with a pin and a decision.  Bast’s wins were his first varsity wins as a freshman in his first outing.  Also getting his first win as a freshman was Dylan Adair (132) with a pin.

Oak Mountain went 2-0 in their matches after taking down the Jags 54-24 and Pelham 66-6. The Eagles had a combined 18 pins between their two matches. Undefeated for Oak Mountain were Kevin Rojas (132), Spencer Bulaga (152) with two pins and Justin Evans (170) with two pins.

Host Chelsea went 0-2 after losing to two of the best teams in the state in Thompson and Vestavia. They fell 58-21 to Thompson and 47-18 to Vestavia. Undefeated for the Hornets were Joe Harmon (138) with one pin and one decision and William Adema (170) with one pin and one decision.

Pelham fell at the hands of Hoover 54-15 and Oak Mountain 66-6. Alex Montgomery, Nicholas Coutess and Chase Hawthorne all had one pin between the two matches.
