ACS honors eighth-grade football champions

ALABASTER – Shortly after finishing the season 8-0 and hoisting the Birmingham Metro Football Championship trophy, members of the Thompson Middle School eighth-grade football team got to celebrate their achievements again on Dec. 12.
During the “Good things happening in our schools” portion of its Dec. 12 meeting, the Alabaster Board of Education spotlighted the team for its memorable season.
During the 2016 season, the eighth-grade football team defeated Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville, Simmons, Oak Mountain, Liberty Park, Spain Park, Bumpus and Pizitz to finish the season with an 8-0 overall record and the metro championship.
“Just think, in a few years you’re going to be hoisting a state championship trophy at Thompson High School,” said Alabaster School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers.
During the School Board meeting, which was well-attended by family and friends, members of the team received a certificate of recognition from Vickers and board members. The team’s coaching staff consists of head coach Phillip Lawson and assistant coaches Erik Kuykendall, Alex Deal, Anthony Butts, Micah Roberson, Matt Maddox, Shane Hutchinson, Sam Thigpen, Wes Barnes, Matt Lipscomb, Andy Garrett, Ron Munday, David Scoggins and Ken Robertson.
