The fifth annual Miss Heart of Alabaster Pageant will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14 in the Thompson High School auditorium. Girls from 3 to 18 years old will have the opportunity to develop confidence and social skills while making new friends.

“It started in 2011. We wanted to do something in the community to help girls gain confidence and poise,” said pageant director and organizer Joy Letson.

Girls who participate in the pageant will be grouped into five divisions based on age: Tiny, Princess, Pre-Teen, Jr. Teen and Teen. A queen will be crowned in each division. The number of crowned alternates will vary, depending on how many girls compete in each division.

Each contestant will participate in a short casual wear walk and an eveningwear walk. Contestants will also receive a 20-second introduction.

Jacks Bains of Southern Exposure Photography will serve as the event’s official photographer. All participants have the option to receive discount headshots from Southern Exposure Photography.

Serene Nail Spa in Helena is also offering discounts on manicures and pedicures to all contestants.

Flowerz N More will provide decorations for the stage.

The winners of each division will receive a crown and a sash. They will participate in a photo shoot and have the opportunity to participate in the 2017 Alabaster Christmas Parade.

Winners are encouraged to use their crowns and titles in any way they can to help the community. Formalwear for all public appearances will be supplied by Glitz & Gowns.

All contestants receive a $50 discount if they choose to enroll in the National American Miss Alabama pageant in July. Contestants are also put into a drawing for a full scholarship to enroll in the pageant.

“A lot of people see pageants as negative. The way I teach the girls is that it’s about being their best selves. It’s not just about putting on makeup and being the prettiest girl on stage,” Letson said.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. The deadline to register is Jan. 5. For more information, visit the Miss Heart of Alabaster pageant’s Facebook page or email missheartofalabaster@aol.com.
