Jefferson-Shelby Classic tips off next week

Ten Shelby County basketball teams on both the girls and boys side will be competing in the Jefferson-Shelby Hoops Classic, which tips off on Monday, Jan. 2. This is the inaugural tournament between the bordering counties and will feature 75 games over a five-day span through Jan. 6.

The tournament will be hosted by Center Point High School, Corner High School, Chelsea High School and Helena High School up until the finals, which will take place at the University of Montevallo. Chelsea and Helena will both host until the semifinal round, while Corner and Center Point are hosting until the quarterfinals. There is a total of five rounds in the tournament, including the championship game.

Boys and girls teams with representation in the tournament from Shelby County will be Montevallo, Vincent, Calera, Chelsea, Thompson, Briarwood, Shelby County, Oak Mountain and Helena, while Pelham will solely be represented by its girls team.

Oak Mountain, Helena and Montevallo all have first round byes in the tournament and won’t play until Tuesday’s second round. There will be a winner’s bracket and loser’s bracket for the duration of the tournament. Tickets are $5 at the door and a tournament pass may be purchased through preptix.com for $20.

First round

Thompson vs. Minor: 12:30 p.m., Monday at Center Point.

Calera vs. Gardendale: 12:30 p.m., Monday at Chelsea.

Shelby County vs. Pleasant Grove: 2:30 p.m., Monday at Helena.

Mortimer Jordan vs. Briarwood: 3:30 p.m., Monday at Center point.

Chelsea vs. Hueytown: 3:30 p.m., Monday at Chelsea.

Oak Grove vs. Vincent: 5 p.m., Monday at Corner.

Second round

Montevallo vs. Fultondale: 2:30 p.m., Tuesday at Corner.

Vincent will play Corner at Corner on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. if they win their first round matchup.

Calera will play Shades Valley at Chelsea on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. if they win their first round matchup.

Chelsea will play Pinson Valley at Chelsea on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. if they win their first round matchup.

Thompson will play McAdory at Center Point on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. if they win their first round matchup.

Briarwood will play Center Point at Center Point on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. if they win their first round matchup.

Oak Mountain will play the winner of Shelby County/Pleasant Grove at Helena on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Clay-Chalkville vs. Helena: 5:30 p.m., Tuesday at Helena.
