NORTH SHELBY – Officials, enthusiasts and community members gathered on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to celebrate a grand opening and ribbon cutting at High Point Climbing and Fitness off U.S. 280.

High Point owner John O’Brien said the location is the company’s third facility and one he is particularly proud of because of the amount of work that had to be done to renovate the building.

“It really turned out incredible,” O’Brien said and thanked the architects and others who worked on the project.

Partner President John Wiygul also spoke prior to the ceremonial ribbon cutting, thanking the community for its welcome.

“We’re glad to be part of the Birmingham community,” he said.

The ribbon cutting was hosted by the Birmingham Business Alliance.

High Point features a rope room for longer endurance climbs, bouldering room for shorter strength climbs, kids’ area, gear rentals and shop, training areas, meeting rooms and other fitness amenities such as yoga space and cardio equipment.

For the grand opening, day passes were available for half price, $8, all day on Jan. 18.

Monthly and annual memberships are also available.

High Point Birmingham hosted the Vulcan Cup competition, as part of the USA Climbing National Cup Series, on Dec. 16-17, 2016, bringing in some of the world’s top climbers to compete for a $10,000 cash purse.
