The Alabaster City Council set a public hearing for March 27 to discuss and potentially vote on the Highway 119 Overlay District.

The plan, if approved, will determine the appearance of all future developments along the roughly four-mile stretch of Alabama 119 between U.S. 31 and Shelby County 80.

“The goal of the 119 overlay was to protect the integrity and look of our corridor that enters into our residential part,” said Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon. “I believe the residents of Alabaster are going to be fully supportive of trying to protect that corridor.”

If passed, it would apply only to parcels directly fronting Alabama 119, and all current structures in the corridor would be grandfathered in.

The proposed resolution states that prior to the issuance of any new business license, building permit, or any subdivision or resurvey of existing property, individuals, businesses, applicants or property owners wishing to locate a business, build or alter a structure or subdivide or develop land within the State Route 119 district would be required to submit to the building official for approval a development or business plan for each parcel or tract of land proposed to be developed or utilized.

Council members voted on Feb. 13 to schedule the public hearing, which will begin at 7 p.m. at Alabaster City Hall.

In other news, the council:

*Voted to appoint Bobby Harris to the Alabaster Water Board for a term that will end Jan. 30, 2023.

*Heard from Mayor Handlon regarding a proclamation establishing Feb. 25 as Arbor Day.

*Appointed David Hughes, Jerry Smith and re-appointed Marie Jordan to the Alabaster Beautification Board.

*Set a public hearing for Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. regarding the annexation of 1604 First Ave. West.

*Approved a resolution regarding fees to use athletic fields and associate facilities of the City of Alabaster Parks and Recreation department.

*Announced applications for the Alabaster City Schools Board of Education are being accepted until March 10.

*Set a public hearing for March 13 at 7 p.m. to consider the demolition of two properties determined by the Alabaster Housing Abatement Board to be unsafe to the extent it create a public nuisance. The properties are 2022 Butler Road and 2040 Butler Road.

*Set a public hearing for March 13 at 7 p.m. to consider fixing costs of abatements for several addresses.

*Approved a resolution regarding a Shelby Baptist Medical Center bond issuance for the Medical Clinic Board.

*Heard from a concerned resident regarding flooding on his property, which is located near the site of the new Alabaster High School.
