Spain Park baseball clinches playoff berth

MOUNTAIN BROOK – Spain Park High School’s baseball team clinched a playoff berth with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Mountain Brook on Friday, April 21.

After Mountain Brook scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning, Spain Park answered with one run in the top of the fourth then took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Starting pitcher Justin McClure made the lead hold up, as he allowed two runs on six hits and one walk in seven innings.

McClure and Will Battersby each had two hits for SPHS.

Jacob Rich scored one run, and William Mee scored two.

The runs were driven in by Michael Purser and McClure, and on an error by the MBHS defense.

The Jaguars took an important step toward the playoff berth with an 8-2 home win over Mountain Brook on Thursday, April 20.

 

Spain Park, the No. 2 seed in its area behind Oak Mountain, will travel to Grissom for a best-of-three, first-round playoff series with games at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, April 28.

If necessary, Game 3 would be played at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 29.

The two teams enter the series with identical 22-14 records on the season.
