MT LAUREL – For the 14th year, runners will gather in the Mt Laurel Town Center for the Shake and Bake 5K.
This year’s race will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5.
The family-friendly 5K race will take runners through Mt Laurel’s shady, tree-lined streets.
“It’s all through the neighborhood of Mt Laurel,” Houston Hollingsworth, trips and events coordinator for Vapor Ministries, said about the route, which is the same as previous years.
The start/finish line is on Croft Street, between Mt Laurel’s shops and the Cahaba Valley Fire station.
The race started as a fundraising opportunity for various soccer ministries on behalf of the Alabama Women’s Soccer Foundation, which now hosts the race jointly with Vapor, a Christian organization whose goal is to glorify Christ by advancing the gospel and serving the poor.
“One of the key ways we do this is through our discipleship-making soccer leagues at their centers in Haiti and Africa.” Hollingsworth said in a press release. “Last year, the event raised over $13,000 for Vapor Ministries. Our goal would be to exceed $15,000 for this year’s event.”
About 150 runners participated in last year’s race.
The Shake and Bake 5K offers a USATF-certified course that welcomes runners of all ages and ranges of experience.
Cash prizes will be given to the top two male and female finishers, and awards are given to the top two finishers in each age group.
After the race, participants can enjoy Steel City Pops and shop the Mt Laurel’s Farmers Market and the Mt Laurel Town Center merchants.
