HOOVER – About 45 elementary and middle school students had the opportunity to learn from high school cheerleaders and perform in front of a crowd at Jaguar Stadium.

Spain Park High School held its annual cheerleading clinic on Aug. 23-24, and participants performed prior to the Jaguars’ varsity football game against Gadsden City on Friday, Aug. 25.

“We do this just to be part of the community and get some exposure for young cheerleaders,” Head Cheer Coach Ashelie Halla said.

The cost of the clinic was $40, and proceeds benefit the cheerleading program’s booster club, which provides new uniforms and equipment, and helps with other expenses throughout the year, Halla said.

The clinic lasted for a couple of hours each day.

About 48 SPHS varsity, junior varsity and freshman cheerleaders help teach their young protégés a sideline, a cheer and a dance.

The young cheerleaders performed all three at the football game, and the middle school cheerleaders also performed some stunts.

The cost of the clinic also included a T-shirt, Halla said.

The clinic was held at the Spain Park High School lunchroom.

Anyone interested in participating next year can go ahead and email Halla at ahalla@hoover.k12.al.us.
