TRUSSVILLE – A late run by Spain Park was not enough to avoid a season-ending, 33-21 loss at Hewitt-Trussville on Friday, Nov. 10, in the first round of the Class 7A state playoffs.

The visiting Jaguars (6-5) trailed 17-0 in the third quarter and 27-7 in the fourth quarter before two touchdowns cut the deficit to 27-21, but that was as close as they would get.

Hewitt-Trussville is now 9-1 all-time in first-round playoff games at home, with its only loss in that spot coming in 1995 to Vestavia Hills.

With a perfect 11-0 record, only one of the Huskies’ games this season has been decided by one score.

Spain Park, a No. 4 seed, failed to keep it that close but did better than most of Hewitt’s opponents, which had been defeated by an average score of 48-16 in the regular season.

SPHS falls to 14-11 all-time in the playoffs.

After a scoreless first quarter, top-seeded Hewitt-Trussville took the game’s first lead, 3-0, on a 29-yard field goal by Parker Colburn with 9:17 remaining in the second quarter.

About 7 minutes later, the Huskies made it 10-0 with a 17-yard pass from Paul Tyson to Logan Pitts and point-after by Colburn.

Hewitt scored first in the second half on a four-yard run by Tyson, but Spain Park answered with 5:15 left in the third quarter on six-yard run by quarterback Braxton Barker.

Colburn connected on a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter, and less than one minute into the fourth quarter, Tyson passed to Pitts for a nine-yard touchdown to make the score 27-7 after the extra point.

Spain Park got back into the game thanks to a 13-yard run by Barker and a two-yard touchdown pass from Barker to D’Arie Johnson.

Hewitt-Trussville put the game away with an eight-yard run by Elliott McElwain with 1:40 to go in the game.

The hosts outgained SPHS 507 yards to 312, and two lost fumbles by the Jags did not help.

Barker completed 12 passes in 28 attempts for 135 yards and one touchdown.

Johnson rushed 19 times for 109 yards, while Barker added 57 yards on seven carries.

Michael Rogers caught five passes for 63 yards.

Josh Wallace led the Spain Park defense with seven tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Cedric Tooson had six tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.
