HOOVER – Visiting Oak Mountain High School held off Spain Park, 39-31, on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the first area games of the year for both teams.

The game started slowly, with each offense ineffective against the opposing zone defense, but ended with Oak Mountain’s Drew Dunn and Spain Park’s Dayquan Williams raining down three-pointers in an entertaining display.

Oak Mountain (11-5) was held without a field goal to start the game until Chris Mayweather poked out a steal and finished with a layup with 1:25 remaining on the clock in the first period.

Still, the Eagles led 5-2 after one period of play.

Mayweather made it 10-2 with a three-pointer shortly into the second period, and Carson Bobo passed to Mayweather for a dunk to increase the lead to 15-4 with about 3 minutes left in the first half.

Williams ended the Eagles’ run with a shot from long distance, and the Jaguars (5-11) trailed 17-11 at halftime.

Chris Workman and Williams connected on three three-pointers in the third period to trim the deficit to 23-22, but Bobo collected an offensive rebound and was good on a turnaround at the buzzer to make it 25-22 heading into the final period of play.

Spain Park had several opportunities in the fourth quarter to tie the game or take the lead, with Williams continuing his hot shooting, but could not convert, as Dunn often answered with shots of his own.

A Williams make from beyond the arc with 3:12 left in the game made the score 32-31 in favor of the Eagles, but that was as close as SPHS would get, as foul shots and an offensive rebound and putback by Bobo brought the game to its final score.

Williams led all scorers with 16 points in a losing effort, while Dunn had 15 points and Mayweather had 11.

Spain Park visits Huffman in another area game on Friday, while Oak Mountain hosts Mountain Brook on the same day.
